The Cuyabeno Faunistic Production Reserve has an area of 603,380 square kilometers and was created on November 20, 1979.
The Cuyabeno reserve covers most of the eastern part of the province of Sucumbíos up to the border with Peru. The climate is tropical.
Cuyabeno is one of the best ecotourism sites on the continent of Ecuador, according to our criteria as important and interesting as the Galapagos Islands.
The Laguna Grande of the Cuyabeno Reserve is the most visited site, but there are also possibilities for community tourism.
There are specialized tour operators with their own guides operating from Lago Agrio (Nueva Loja), Quito and Baños.
Entering by canoe from the "Cuyabeno Bridge", where there is an information center for the park rangers of the Ministry of the Environment, it is worth insisting to your guide not to enter quickly, but calmly. Only then can you enjoy the impact of change: from civilization to a share in the jungle world.
Cuyabeno offers systems of small rivers, the Lagunas Grandes with interesting birds and reptiles. It is also worth visiting the indigenous communities, which offer their own handicrafts.
ACCESS
You can get to Lago Agrio by bus from Quito, it takes between 6 and 8 hours, or by plane: the flight lasts half an hour.
From Lago Agrio to Tarapoa (and to the Cuyabeno Bridge) it takes about 2 hours by car. From the Cuyabeno Bridge to the Laguna Grande by canoe it also takes about two and a half hours. (It is better to go slow to see more).
